Why You Should Wear Sunglasses in the Winter
During winter, we sometimes don't realize the need for wearing sunglasses. There are more cloudy days and this sometimes causes us to forget why we wear sunglasses all year round.
Harmful Rays From the Sun
High quality sunglasses, protect us from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. UVA, UVB, and UVC rays can all cause severe damage to the eyes during winter. According to Dr. Tewodros Gedamu,“ In reality, those ultraviolet rays that shine down on you during the summer still exist in the winter. And they still threaten your eyes, especially when bounced off a bright snow. Those of you who love getaways that involve snow-based activities should be extra careful if you plan to spend a long time in the intense reflected sunlight which can be harmful to the eye. It's crucial to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays.
So what's the best way to guard your eyes in the winter months? Eye doctors suggest wearing sunglasses with strong UV protection, so ensure that you purchase a great pair of sunglasses because you'll wear it all year round. Purchase a pair that you find comfortable and totally shields your eyes.”
Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration.
And new research suggests the sun's high-energy visible (HEV) radiation (also called "blue light") may increase your long-term risk of macular degeneration.
The Wind in Winter
In winter the wind can cause the evaporation of the natural moisture in our eyes. In addition with the wind comes dust and debris. Sunglasses can help to prevent these particles from causing microscopic cuts and wind blown damage to our eyes. Have you ever noticed how your eyes will become more red in the winter? While using eye drops can help, it is always best to protect your natural moisture, because nothing is better.
Photokeratitis or ultraviolet keratitis is a painful eye condition caused by exposure of insufficiently protected eyes to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from either natural (e.g. intense sunlight) or artificial (e.g. the electric arc during welding) sources. Source Wikipedia
Sensitive Skin
Sunglasses also can help protect the thin sensitive skin around the eyes during winter. The skin around our eyes is possibly the most fragile on our body and can quickly show the world our
age, tiredness, and overall health. Sunglasses and moisturizing will do wonders for the skin around our eyes in winter.
Reflection From Snow And Ice
It has been reported, now reflects almost 80 percent of the sun’s ray’s. Some of the sun’s most harmful rays are directed into your eyes.
According to this article in the New York Times:
“Winter or summer, hours of bright sunlight can burn the surface of the eye, causing a temporary but painful condition known as photokeratitis. Over time, unprotected exposure can contribute to cataracts, as well as cancer of the eyelids and the skin around the eyes.
UV exposure also may increase the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people over age 65. While cataracts can be removed surgically, there is no way to reverse damage to the macula, the area in the center of the retina.

Comforts Your Eyes and Improves Your Vision
Glare from the snow and ice and not only be harmful to your eyes internally, but it just plain uncomfortable as well. Trying to drive in the winter is already difficult, combine with that problems with vision and you have a recipe for disaster. Wearing high-quality sunglasses will allow you to see everything clearer and with more comfort in the wintertime. We sometimes take for granted being able to see without the distractions. Some of our discomfort is caused by the reaction of our pupils to the bright sunlight. When we have extremely bright conditions our pupils cannot constrict enough to reduce the light to a comfortable level. This causes headaches, eyestrain and we find ourselves doing silly things to try to block the light. Squinting, putting our hands up to our eyes are things we all do. Simply putting on a good pair of sunglasses can solve most of the problem.
Grabbing Sunglasses by Habit
When we think of sunglasses we are normally imagining ourselves at the beach or in a summer setting. And of course, if we were at the beach we would have some of the same conditions that we have in snow. Long, beautiful, bright, sandy beaches, have some of the same harmful eye conditions as winter. Brightness, harmful UV rays, particles such as sand being blown by the wind. It is almost automatic for us to grab our sunglasses before leaving the house in summer and, it should be exactly the same in winter for many of the same reasons. Eye care is important to our health and our quality of life. It should never be left to chance, especially when something as simple as putting on good sunglasses is the solution.
